PRICE: US$625

Measurements: 76ins x 58ins, 193cm x 140cm

Rare south-eastern Yoruba women's shawl dating from lateC19th or early C20th. Two shaded of magenta trans-Saharan silk "alaari" form warp stripes over a hand spun cotton weft. In contrast to the lightweight loosely woven shawls in silk and cotton from the same period this is quite a thick and heavy cloth, closer in weight and handle to the indigo kijiipa wrappers. There are three small blocks of openwork at one selvedge and  three blocks of narrow weft stripes of magenta silk in each panel. There is one tiny hole, at left in detail pick, otherwise condition is very good.
