Some 250 miles east of Ijebu, Kalabari and other peoples of the Niger delta use cloths with Ijebu derived designs as ceremonial dress and masquerade costumes. These cloths, known to the Kalabari as "ikakibite" or "tortoise cloths" are however mostly woven not in Ijebu but in the Igbo town of Akwete to the north of Port Harcourt. This fine example combines Ijebu derived motifs with locally invented patterns in a fine display of virtuoso weaving skill. It is in excellent condition and dates from around the 1960s.
