CODE #: fr300 PRICE: US$375 Measurement: 48ins x 36ins, 123cm x 93cm The small size and predominantly white, red, and blue colour palette distinguishes this cloth from other, more familiar, Ewe textiles. These cloths which are as yet unresearched and not mentioned in the published literature on Ewe cloths. were woven for wear by girls at a puberty/ coming of age ceremony in certain Togolese Ewe communities around the town of Kpalimé. We might speculate that the white/red/ blue (black) palette has a symbolic resonance as in so many other African contexts. In any event it is interesting to see the familiar motifs of Ewe weaving deployed in a different context. The narrow red side strip found on some examples is an archaic tradition found on some C19th Ewe pieces and may indicate past ties with Dioula weaving, where red side strips were typical.
