CODE# E495 PRICE Email us for price MEASURES: 120ins x 76, 303cm x 194 This remarkable cloth cotton and silk man's cloth is in a previously undocumented style. Each wide weft faced cotton strip alternates blocks of dark blue with red or a faded pink. Yellow silk is used to create a narrow weft stripe between each block and for a large supplementary weft float motif on alternate squares. The weft float patterns are quite worn with the silk corroding in places indicating heavy use and wear over many years. The cloth is thinner and lighter weight than is typical of weft faced Ewe cloths. Wide strip weft faced Ewe cloths are associated with the northern Ewe and Kpandu areas but as yet no research has been done that documents the full variety of obscure styles. Aside from the wear on the float motifs and silk weft stripes noted above the cloth is complete and in good condition. Age is late C19th or early C20th. (c) Duncan Clarke, Version 27/09/2009 |
