MEASURES: 73 ins x 46 ins, 185cm x 117cm

Woven from exceptionally fine white hand spun cotton and with rows of fine openwork dividing bands of supplementary weft float motifs. These extremely rare Yoruba shawls have not been published or documented but by the handle of the fabric and the style, as well as the fineness of the thread would appear to date from the late C19th or early C20th. They are very fragile cloths and collecting a complete example such as this with it's two distinct border strips and original hand stitched seams (one has been resewn by machine) intact is remarkable. There are a few tiny marks but overall condition is excellent.
