means "cloth of the great" and is the Asante name for a type
of embroidered cloth worn only by senior chiefs and kings. Although
created using machine embroidery/sewing machines on a woollen blanket
fabric background, these spectacular cloths are still an extraordinary
display of design and creativity. A number of these cloths are in major
museum collections, including one in the recently published catalogue of
the African Art collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The motifs,
like much Akan art, allude to proverbs and royal imagery. As Cole and
Ross note in the volume "Arts of Ghana" (1977) "each
"cloth of the great" is in fact a set of allusions to a
chief's power and responsibility." Each cloth shown is in good
condition. Full details of size, together with price and ordering
information, can be found with a larger picture by clicking on the
thumbnail images below. Please be patient as the images may take a
minute to download. As with all our cloths we guarantee a full refund if
you are not satisfied with any order
