Velvet was a highly prestigious cloth among the Yoruba in the mid part of the C20th. Despite its thickness it was revered for its air of luxury and extravagance and considered the cloth of the wealthy. It is therefore not particularly surprising to find a piece of velvet used as a base for a tied and stitched resist adire pattern, although this is the only example I am aware of.   It is in good condition and dates to circa 1950s.
